There is so much to see in Northern Italy from quaint Alpine villages to bustling urban centers to charming historic towns. Given its variation, it can be difficult to determine what and where to prioritize. That’s why we’ve created this two-week best of Northern Italy itinerary; to guide you to the highlights, as well as some undiscovered gems.
Northern Italy includes the regions of (from west to east): Piedmont, Val d’Aosta, Liguria, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Emilia-Romagna, the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Between the economic engine of Milan and the well-heeled cities of Alto-Adige (also known as Südtirol), the northern regions have some of the most wealth in Italy. Fittingly, northerners tend to be extremely proud of what their area has to offer.
The map of Northern Italy below details a train trip starting in Turin and ending in Venice, with optional detours to Genoa, Bolzano (and the Dolomites), and Bologna. This train itinerary can be shortened to just a few highlights, or to spend more time in a specific area. If you’re lucky enough to have more than two weeks, this northern Italy itinerary can be extended to include every optional detour and with additional time spent in each location.
Because there is so much to cover when it comes to the best of Northern Italy – including hotel and restaurant recommendations, top sights, and ways to spend even more time at each destination – you can dive into specific articles for each recommendation by clicking the links in the map, or clicking on the links under the map.
